Today marks the day that I am officially back to my pre-pregnancy weight. Weston will be 4 months old in 2 days...I can't believe that the weight has come off this quickly...considering I haven't worked out a day since he was born. Two weeks ago I thought "what-the-heck" and tried on my old jeans - which fit perfectly, and now they're getting a little big. On average pregnant women who are of normal weight before pregnancy should gain 25-35 pounds during pregnancy. I thought I was doing pretty good because I only gained about 10 pounds the first 20 weeks of my pregnancy...but due to my mild pre-eclampsia, I gained about 10 pounds just between weeks 34 and 36 alone - yikes! And a grand total of 40 pounds. People ask what I did to "get the weight off", am I eating different? No...during pregnancy you only need an extra 100-300 calories/day, so knowing that I tried really hard not to "eat for two". I really kept eating the same as before. After my delivery I only lost 12 pounds (what about the other 28? I thought). Lactating women need about 300-500 more calories a day than they consumed before pregnancy. At first I was starving and eating ravenously, but then when I went back to work I was back on my 3 meals a day eating schedule and drinking lots of water (the hardest part). Maybe the water-drinking has a little to do with the weight loss, but mostly I just try to eat like I always have...and we have a little less time to eat out at restaurants, but we still try to have our date night every week, so I still splurge then. The big thing to do when eating out is to ask for a "to go" box early so you don't over eat. And sweets? I still like to have my ice cream...I might not be eating it every day like I did when I was pregnant, but I still have it a couple times a week. So, do I miss being pregnant? Yes, and no. I am a whole different kind of tired now, but I sleep so much more comfortably, and I really missed my regular clothes, so it's nice to put the maternity clothes in the Rubbermaid tub and tuck it away in the closet. I still have my pear shape...think Elastagirl from The Incredibles, but without the flexibility. For now, goodbye big belly...until we meet again.
